Late last year there were quite a few rumors swirling around, related to the fact that Google was prepping a device with the brand new Andromeda OS on board. Huawei was supposedly manufacturing the tablet under the Nexus brand. Well the project existed, but today we learn it got canned.
The device got to prototype phase and rumors spread all over the web about it. Andromeda itself was shelved for now, but it may resurface at some point in time, as such projects usually do. Sources close to the project claim that the Huawei Nexus slate was meant to be the inaugural Andromeda device. Google was working on a tablet/laptop hybrid known under the codename Bison.
Pieces of Andromeda were taken and implemented in Android Oreo in the meantime, so there was no reason to manufacture the machine. If Huawei’s device did come to life, it would have had 4 GB of RAM, a microSD card slot, a pretty fast CPU and 128 GB of storage. No clue about the CPU maker, but Qualcomm and NVIDIA were in the cards.
Even the design traits leaked out: a rectangular slate, but one that wasn’t exactly top notch in manufacturing quality or materials, rather generic and typical of the whole Nexus tablet series. It was black and had a plasticky rubberized back it seems. The size was close to the one of the Nexus 7 and it felt a lot like a hybrid of the Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 apparently, but somehow cheaper in quality.
It’s no wonder the project got canned… In the meantime Google is said to keep on working on a fresh Chromebook Pixel, with a dedicated Assistant button and fingerprint scanner.
