Today’s big event in tech is not only the BUILD 2014 one, but also IDF, where Intel is the main brand. The company made some unveilings during the show, including new chips codenamed Braswell meant for low cost laptops and new Bay Trail chips for cheap slates.
Braswell is a system on chip product based on a 14 nm design, that makes the chips efficient. They’re actually more efficient than the 22 nm Haswell and Bay Trail chips that they’re supposed to replace. Future Chromebooks are expected to rely on this solution. Intel demoed a set top box that it has been working on with Xiaomi and also introduced new 64 bit chips for Android and Windows tablets.
Those are lower end slates, with prices starting at $99. Finally, the company unveiled a version of Android 4.4 KitKat with a kernel optimized for the new 64 bit Bay Trail chips. I’d say that Qualcomm, MediaTek and Nvidia are in trouble after this announcement… but we’ll have to wait and see.
