The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has been available for a while now, but it’s only this week that we’ve found out about the rooting of the device. The QNX slate was apparently rooted by developer Chris Wade over the past weekend. What this means is that you’ll be able to access files, folders and settings that normally won’t be available for the average user.
The developer community can consider this a pretty big achievement, especially since this is the first time that the device is rooted successfully. This doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to load custom ROMs on the slate yet, since that requires unlocking the bootloader. The root is available here courtesy of a previously found exploit, so once RIM patches it, goodbye rooting.
Wade has already baptized his method to “dingleberry” and wants to release tools for everyone to root the slate as soon as possible. More info will come over the following days.
