After an initial boom of 5 inch handsets with high resolutions and good CPUs, now it’s time for the cheaper phablets to shine. One of them is the ZTE U887, a 5 inch lower end device, that seems to fit in the same range with the Samsung Galaxy Grand, that was recently announced.

The U887 is a dual core device, with a 5 inch 800 x 480 pixel display, support for TD-SCDMA and GSM networks and 512 MB of RAM. The CPU here is a MT6577 chip and as far as the design goes, this ZTE model isn’t that fat from the Nubia Z5, or at least the images show that. There’s also a 5 megapixel camera at the back and not the 13 megapixel shooter of the quad core Nubia, that’s a higher end unit.

Just like the Samsung Galaxy Grand, ZTE U887 has no price or launch date just yet, but I’m sure that MWC 2013 will give us a glimpse of the product. Expect further Chinese companies and other Asian brands to attack the 5 inch smartphone segment, as the rumored Galaxy S IV is supposed to popularize that when it comes.
