Sharp had a big showcasing of a bunch of new displays based on fresh technologies, after announcing earlier in the week the start of the production of LCD panels based on the new indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) technology. Now the results are ready to be showcased and that’s exactly what happened at the Society for Information Display Show in Boston.
Right now the tech is intended for phones and tablets and the prototypes include a bunch of LCDs, one with a 4.9 inch diagonal and 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, while the other is a 6.1 incher with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, that would make even the iPad 3 jealous. A pair of OLED panels, once at 13.5 inches and 3840 x 2160 (QFHD) were also these to amaze everyone. These panels are based on White OLEDs with RGB color filter, a technology similar to the one on that LG HDTV recently launched.
Also in the mix were some flexible screens, like the flexible 3.4 inch 540 x 960 unit shown above. Sharp says that this new tech will give birth to screens with higher resolutions, lower power usage and narrower bezels. Performance will also increase, because smaller thin film transistors are used. Production lines will be upgraded to make these in this fiscal year…
