Computex 2012 goes on, with yet another batch of Windows 8 tablets, mostly hybrids. AMD is also in the mix, not only Intel, although the latter have been getting a lot more press coverage. AMD has been showing off a Windows 8 tablet from Compal at Computex Taipei and it adopts that same hybrid form factor we’ve seen on some other devices over the past days.
That involves a detachable keyboard dock and this time this is a 11.6 inch device, not the thinnest unit I’ve seen, I have to admit. It’s advertised as a “under 20 mm” slate with Windows 8 and an AMD chip. AMD promises that the tablet will get an upgraded performance and thermal capability when docked. This prototype may be the start of something interesting, as it seems that not only Intel or Nvidia are targeting hybrids with Windows 8. The unusual aspect about this Compal unit is its kickstand, that’s used to type more comfortably when there’s no dock around.
Other than that we spot a glossy display, a fingerprint magnet and a pretty bulky hinge. Another thing I noticed is that the buttons on the hybrid’s keyboard seem really well space out. We’d also like to see some benchmarks for Windows 8 running on AMD’s solutions, but no can do for now…
