During the Web 2.0 Summit taking place this week, RIM’s co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that the impressive BlackBerry PlayBook slate will be supporting hardware upgrades via a module cavity. It’ll most likely host the 3G or 4G modules required to make the device compatible with these types of connectivity. NFC is also an option.

With the horsepower of the device (1GHz, 1GB RAM, 7 inch touchscreen, WiFi, 3G via BlackBerry phone) and the fresh QNX OS (multitasking, no lag, great media features), the PlayBook looks like an alpha male on the slate market. The upgradability option is certainly a welcome bonus and it provides a lot of potential to the product.

Wonder what’s next for the BlackBerry tablet…a projector?
