The latest IDC numbers are in and they’re related to the Indian tablet market this time. It seems that the Indian market grew 46% sequentially over Q3 2017.
1.1 million tablets were shipped in India over the past 3 months, growing 46% from Q2 and 3% from the same time last year. The Gujarat government has applied the NAMO Tablet Scheme for college students, which was the key driver for growth . The shipments in the commercial segment almost tripled from the same time last year and surpassed the consumer segment for the first time.
Consumer shipments went up after 3 quarters of decline. They grew 24% sequentially in Q3 and festive season offers are to “blame”. Lenovo leads the tablet market, according to IDC, with a 26% market share and a growth of 73.7% in shipments from the previous quarter.
Acer is second, with 18.6% market share, thanks to a shift from consumer to commercial. Samsung is third and iBall fourth. Datawind dropped to fifth, with a 12.7% share and a small growth of 1.6% from Q2. Phablets are still replacing most entry level tablets, so the future is unsure for the commercial market at least.
