While Apple has been playing with eSIMs for a while now, ASUS is relatively new to the field and they’ve just announced a partner for that purpose. We’re talking about OT-Morpho, a world leader in digital security and identification technologies.
ASUS has selected them to be the first provider of eSIM solutions for the Windows 10 tablet PC of choice. That model is actually a hybrid, the new ASUS Transformer Mini. This device runs on Windows 10 and will debut this summer. It’ll be the first mobile computer with an eSIM solution compatible with GSM Phase 2 specs, in the consumer area.
Such solutions enhance the “Always Connected Windows user experience”. Its design ensures excellent compatibility with MNO networks all over the world and also lets it offer the largest coverage possible. The solution has been validated for Windows 10 use and it lets ASUS offer improved connectivity for laptops, notebooks and other personal computing devices with Windows.
A good piece of news is that you won’t need to buy new SIMs when you travel, you have to set up your eSIM for the regional carriers. This info came during the MWC Shanghai show, taking place these days in China. We expect more companies to debut eSIM tablets in the near future, in the detriment of carriers, that may feel they are losing differentiation by being lumped together as just a toggle on a Settings menu with this solution.
ASUS Transformer Mini is a 10.1 inch 1280 x 800 pixel machine, with 4 GB of RAM and a quad core Intel Atom X5 CPU. It has 128 GB of storage, a 32 Wh battery and a 2 MP front camera. Sonicmaster tech is also here and the price is around $500.
