I remember my surprise when I saw the first $100 Windows tablet and now nothing surprises me anymore, not even this $81 Windows slate. It’s called Pipo Work W4 and it’s a Chinese model, pictured below and undercutting even some of the most affordable Android models.
The cheapest Windows tablet from a big brand is the $120 Toshiba Encore Mini, but the $81 area is a totally new one. And now obviously we’ll discuss specs. This model features an 8 inch 1280 x 800 pixel display, with an IPS panel, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. There’s an Intel Atom Z3735F processor (quad core Bay Trail), WiFi, Bluetooth, 2 megapixel rear camera and a front 0.3 MP shooter.
We’ve got a 4500 mAh battery here and the reason for such cheap slates appearing is obvious: Microsoft is offering Windows for free to device makers building slates with 9 inch or smaller screens. Pipo may not be a big brand right now, but don’t be surprised if it’s sold for $100 for some retailers’ profit.
