After seeing Samsung patent foldable screens, tablets and phones, it’s the turn of LG to respond with similar innovations. The LG G6 is said to keep the bulk of the LG G5 approach, but that doesn’t mean that some other experimental products won’t be ready for 2017.
LG’s most recent patent application shows a foldable screen, plus also a transparent one. Ever since the LG G Flex 2, LG hasn’t been that active in this field, so they have some catching up to do. We’ve heard of transparent touchscreens before, with Samsung working on one in 2013 and an Aston Martin concept Mobiado phone proposing one ever since 2011.
Before we reach phones, we’re going to have to see such panels implemented on bigger diagonals, like those of tablets. The LG patent shows a foldable screen that can be used on both sides, which makes us wonder where the components may go. We could be dealing with a sort of scroll-like mechanism, with the bulk of the hardware inserted at the edge of the device and the actual flexible screen being free to curve and float in the air.
