With the recent announcement of the Apple quarterly results, you’ve probably heard that the iPad sold about 2 million less units than expected and 2 or 3 million less than last year. It’s clear that the Android tablets are gaining in popularity and a recent Strategy Analytics report confirms that.

According to their figures, Android dominates the tablet market with over half of the global shipments. Android has registered an impressive growth, by shipping 34.6 million slates in Q2 2013, up from 18.5 million in the second quarter of last year. Apple is also bleeding market share, going down from 47.2% in Q2 last year to 28.3% over the last months.

Meanwhile Android jumped from 51.4% to 67% in just a year and these figures also include white box makers. And we’re yet to see shipments of the Nexus 7 II, new Amazon slates and other potential new Samsung units. Of course, the arrival of the iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5 will change the game a bit, but that will be felt around Q4 this year or Q1 2014.
