Google is making its smart-home platform more open to AI agents beyond Gemini. Its new Home MCP integration gives compatible clients a standardized way to read the state of devices in Google Home, issue supported commands, and review event history.
MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is designed to connect AI systems with external data and tools. In this case, it can expose a household’s Google Home structure, Nest products, and Matter-compatible devices to an authorized agent. That could enable requests that go beyond a simple voice command, such as checking how long lights were on, reviewing activity while someone was away, or creating a custom dashboard for the home.
Built for AI workflows, not one-tap setup
Google is positioning the feature as a separate access path from Gemini for Home, which remains the built-in assistant in its ecosystem. Home MCP is instead intended for people who want to pair Google Home with a preferred AI agent or assemble more involved workflows.
The currently named compatible clients are:
- Google Antigravity
- Claude Cowork
- OpenClaw
This is not a consumer-ready toggle. Setting up Home MCP requires a Google Cloud project, enabling the Home API, and OAuth authentication, placing it more squarely in the realm of developers and technically confident smart-home users.
Controls come with security boundaries
Google has placed limits around what an AI agent can do in a real home. Home MCP cannot perform sensitive actions such as unlocking doors, and it is subject to rate limits. Google also cautions that an agent connected to a home may behave in unintended ways, although access can later be revoked through Google Home.
Automation creation and management are not yet supported through MCP; Google lists that capability as coming soon. Home MCP is currently in Early Access for Google Home Premium Advanced users in the United States. It is a notable opening for users who want an AI assistant other than Gemini to work with their home, but the setup requirements and security limits mean it is not yet a replacement for ordinary smart-home controls.
