Apple has identified Samsung Display as the manufacturer of the foldable OLED panel in the iPhone Duo, while stressing that the display is not a standard part selected from the supplier’s catalog. For a device meant to expand from a phone into a small-screen workspace, Apple’s emphasis is on a customized panel designed around its own goals for industrial design, durability, and daily use.
In an interview with Michael Fisher, Apple hardware engineering vice president Rich Dinh and senior director of display technologies JP Guillou described a process in which Apple defines the product requirements before component suppliers build to those specifications. Guillou said the iPhone Duo does not simply use an off-the-shelf Samsung Display OLED, even though its screen dimensions are close to those of the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
An uninterrupted inner display is the priority
The iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer panel. Apple’s design priorities for the larger screen focus on making it more useful when opened for reading, multitasking, and media, while addressing the compromises that typically come with foldable hardware.
- IP68 dust and water resistance is a stated target for the device’s design.
- An under-display camera removes a visible camera cutout from the inner screen, although Apple accepts a reduction in camera image quality to preserve the uninterrupted display area.
- A more pronounced matte finish and nano-texture treatment are intended to reduce reflections and help make the fold-area crease less noticeable.
Samsung has used under-display cameras on earlier Galaxy Z Fold generations, but Apple’s implementation combines that approach with its own display finish and durability targets. The iPhone Duo can also be used partially folded, with its interface adapting to the posture in a manner similar to Flex Mode.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is described as thinner and lighter, with lower purchase and repair costs, while Apple is positioning the iPhone Duo around its particular balance of screen continuity, protection, and foldable usability. Reports of a three-year exclusive supply agreement for Samsung Display’s foldable panels have circulated separately, but Apple has not confirmed them. U.S. pricing and availability for the iPhone Duo remain unconfirmed in the available information.
