Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra

Microsoft is positioning the Surface Laptop Ultra as a portable workstation for developers, AI researchers, and creators who want to run demanding models locally rather than rely entirely on cloud services. Preorders begin at $2,599, with shipments scheduled to start October 16.

At the center of the laptop is NVIDIA’s RTX Spark N1X platform. Microsoft says the hardware can handle local AI inference and content-generation tasks, potentially reducing dependence on cloud processing and its associated costs. The Surface Laptop Ultra will be offered with 18-core or 20-core processors, starting with 32GB of unified memory and scaling to 128GB.

AI performance is the main draw

The highest-end configurations reach 6,144 GPU cores and up to one petaflop of FP4 AI compute. Its unified memory is shared between the CPU and GPU, although that does not mean all installed memory is automatically available to graphics workloads. Microsoft also claims the machine can retain 99% of its peak performance on battery power.

Microsoft’s own testing puts video generation at 6.2 times faster and image generation at 4.3 times faster than a MacBook Pro with M5 Pro. Those figures have not yet been independently verified, so real-world testing will be important for assessing how the Surface performs across common AI tools and creator workflows.

A large touch display and practical port selection

The laptop uses a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and a mini-LED panel. Microsoft rates its peak HDR brightness at 2,000 nits when measured over 10% of the display. Touch input is finger-only: the screen does not support Surface Pen or Slim Pen.

  • A haptic touchpad that is 30% larger than the one on the Surface Laptop 8th Edition
  • An approximately 18mm-thick aluminum chassis weighing about 4.4 pounds
  • Magnetic Connect charging, which attaches a cable magnetically to a USB-C port and disconnects if snagged while leaving the port usable for data, video, and accessories
  • Two additional USB-C ports, HDMI, USB-A, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack
  • A replaceable SSD, with configurations offering up to 2TB of storage

Microsoft also announced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop with 128GB of unified memory. It is priced at $5,999 and is slated to begin shipping in the United States in November. For mobile professionals who need substantial local AI capacity, the Surface Laptop Ultra appears to be the more portable option, though independent performance and battery testing will determine how effectively it delivers on Microsoft’s claims.
