Acer Project DualPlay Mini gaming handheld concept.
Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini is an 8-inch handheld-to-mini-laptop concept.

Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini imagines a gaming handheld that can take on more PC-like duties without requiring a separate keyboard. The 8-inch concept uses a flip-and-swivel mechanism: raise and rotate the display, and a backlit physical keyboard is revealed beneath it. In one position, it is a controller-equipped portable for gamepad-friendly titles; in another, it becomes a compact laptop-style machine.

The keyboard is intended for more than basic text entry. Acer specifically points to first-person shooters as a use case, offering a keyboard-based control option when a traditional handheld layout is not ideal. The Project DualPlay Mini can also connect to an external monitor for work, extending its pitch from gaming device to highly portable PC.

A handheld-first take on DualPlay

The Mini follows Acer’s earlier Project DualPlay concept shown at IFA 2024, but takes the idea in the opposite direction. That earlier project began as a Predator laptop with a detachable controller stored beneath its keyboard. Project DualPlay Mini starts with the footprint and controls of a handheld, then builds a miniature laptop mode into the same chassis.

Acer has confirmed only that the prototype uses an Intel processor. The company has not disclosed the specific chip, memory, storage, display resolution, or battery capacity, so its prospective gaming performance and everyday-PC capability remain unknown. Its cooling system combines a metal Predator AeroBlade fan with thinner blades and a conventional plastic fan, an arrangement Acer says is similar to the one used in the Predator Atlas 8.

A concept, not a product announcement

The rear of the device includes a Morse-code anniversary message reading “Acer 50 since 1976.” Beyond that design detail, Project DualPlay Mini remains firmly a concept. Acer has announced neither a price nor plans to bring it to market.

For now, the project is most relevant as a look at how a handheld PC could accommodate both controller and keyboard play without carrying extra accessories. Whether that transformation mechanism can fit into a practical, durable retail device—and whether an 8-inch keyboard can be comfortable enough for regular use—are questions Acer has not yet answered.
