Panasonic is a name you usually associate with TV sets, maybe some Lumix cameras, but they also make rugged tablets. Their latest one is the Panasonic Toughbook S1, which surprises us through its smaller footprint. The device is just 7 inches in diagonal.
This is an Android tablet with warm swappable batteries. The device is pricey at around $1200 and comes with IP67/IPX5 dust and water resilience certification. It’s also certified within the military standards MIL-STD-810H, having undergone tests to see if it takes falls onto concrete from 1.5 meters in height. It can easily operate between temperatures like minus 20 degrees Celsius and plus 50 degrees Celsius. Toughbook S1 shares some accessories with the Toughbook L1 and A3 models, including stuff like batteries, cradles, dock and styli.
The latter can allow a client sign for delivery, in case you’re working with Amazon or something like it. The slate comes with a barcode reader and also a full size USB port, where you can plug a multitude of gadgets. It has a 7 inch 1280 x 800 pixel display, of the IPS LCD variety, which can be operated with gloves. There’s even a special rain mode in the mix and the screen can be used with with hands. It goes up to 500 nits in brightness and has anti reflection protection.
Other specs include a 5 MP front camera and 13 MP back camera, Android 10, a Snapdragon 660 CPU and 4 GB of RAM, plus 64 GB of storage. There’s also two battery capacities here: a larger one with 14 hours of operation and the ability to warm swap batteries (meaning you can do it while the device is active, but in a sort of sleep mode).
