The new Kindle Fire HD unit, the 2013 edition is a 7 inch 1280 x 800 slate that has recently gone through the iFixit teardown treatment. We’re dealing with a slate that packs a 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4 dual core CPU and pretty much the same specs as last year.
The product is priced at just $139, so it’s reasonably cheap. iFixit took it apart to see what’s inside and also discovered the product is easy to repair yourself. Amazon only updated the case here, moved the physical buttons to the back edges and iFixit really appreciated the fact that it’s very easy to remove internal components without special tools.
The battery is easy to replace, of course if you can get hold of a replacement unit with 16.43 Whr capacity. Also easy to remove is the glass panel, that can be separated from the display. By the way, the teardown guys found that there’s 8 GB of flash storage inside the device, made by Toshiba, a TI OMAP 4470 ARM Cortex A9 CPU and a Synaptics touchscreen controller.
