Frankly speaking, I didn’t even know Toshiba made e-readers and also frankly speaking their tablets are kind of… not so good. Well, the device you can see pictured in this article is the Toshiba Bookplace Mono, a 6 inch E-Ink HD unit with a touchscreen and 4 GB of internal memory.

Bookplace Mono supports a 1024 x 758 pixel resolution and it also packs a microSD card slot, WiFi 802.11n, a loudspeaker and an audio jack. The new e-reader will have a battery life of 8000 page turns and it will come with support for the most popular ebook formats (Epub and XMDF), that you’ll be able to purchase from the Toshiba e-book store dubbed Bookplace.

Mono also comes with text to speech, based on a proprietary Speech Synthesis technology from Toshiba. Toshiba is already cooperating with 5 major Japanese publishers and by the way, if you want this product, it goes for $145 and it will hit stores from April 16th. Sadly, it’s very unlikely that this model will ever leave Japan.
