As usual, the Fall brings us new Amazon tablets, which have just debuted without a dedicated event and without too much fuss. Amazon has the Fire HD 8 (2024) tablet out and we’re detailing all the new things about it below.
From what I know, it’s been two years since the last Amazon tablet, which was released in 2022. The new slates have the same size and shape, the same screen, same CPU. But there’s also good news: they have the same price, better camera, more RAM and more AI smarts. Amazon Fire HD 8 brings 50% more RAM than its predecessor and a starting price of $100. The 14th gen Amazon Fire HD 8 even starts off at as little as $55, believe it or not.
The entry level model brings 32 GB of storage, 3 GB of RAM and there’s also a version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Oddly enough, there’s no Plus model in this generation, so there’s no version with support for wireless charging. The Fire HD 8 includes just as much memory and the same 5 MP rear camera as the Fire HD 8 Plus.
Other specs include a microSD card slot, 13 hours of battery life, an audio jack and stereo speakers. The 5 MP back camera replaces the 2 MP of the 2022 model. It weighs 337 grams, has Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 5.
There are also 2024 versions of the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids tablets and Kids Pro tablets. They now have higher prices, but come with a rugged case, 6 months of Amazon Kids+, no lockscreen ads and 2 year worry free guarantee.
So, what’s the deal with AI?
The slates are getting AI, through these features:
- Writing Assist: The Fire OS keyboard helps you with documents, emails, social media posts, with pre-set styels for changing the language and tone of the text
- Webpage Summaries: The Silk Web browser can provide summaries of the content of the web articles
- Wallpaper Creator: use text to generate pictures.
