The Nvidia Shield gaming tablet has been updated via OTA pretty fast, once new software was out, so the device was well kept. It’s now time to move on to a new device, a next generation of Shield, it appears.
Word’s out that the new Nvidia Shield gaming tablet will sport the Tegra X1 chipset, which is a serious upgrade from the K1 chip. The current Shield tablet has a 2.2 GHz quad core Tegra K1, which was one of the best CPUs of last year, judging by the benchmarks. The X1 takes it to the next level, with 8 cores, 64 bit architecture and a new Maxwell GPU.
The first tests show that the X1 is 40% more powerful than the K1, which is very impressive. Seeing how the first gen Shield had 2 GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB of storage and microSD card slot, plus 5 MP front and rear camera, we expect 3 or 4 GB of RAM here, 64 GB of storage and maybe 8 MP cameras. The screen should also improve from the 1200p one that the previous device had.
An upgraded to the wireless AC protocol is also being developed and LTE may be bundled from the start.
