The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is the latest generation of Amazon tablet, following the popular last year Kindle Fire. We’ve just received the 7 inch version for testing purposes and unboxed it for your viewing pleasure, with the result being the video below. The device is priced at $199 for the 16 GB WiFi version.
It comes in an oddly shaped, slightly sharp black box, that only holds the tablet itself and an USB cable. There’s no charger included, so you either use your PC for charging or buy a separate charger. The device takes you through an initial setup process, that involves connecting to a WiFi hotspot and then your Amazon account. Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 features a 7 inch display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, an iPS LCD in case you’re wondering. It feels pretty bulky and heavy at first touch and its buttons are too well embedded into the chassis to be comfortable to press.
The device comes with dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus support and surround sound. Its WiFi is 40% faster than its rivals’, thanks to a multiple antennae technology. Inside the tablet we find a TI OMAP 4460 dual core 1.2 GHz processor, 752 MB of RAM and a battery good enough for about 11 hours of e-reading, apparently. Upfront there’s a 1.3 megapixel camera and the OS here is Android 4.0 ICS with Amazon services on top. More details in a couple of days when the review is ready.
