Ubuntu Linux has a ton of fans, enough to keep hope alive that Ubuntu slates will sell after they get crowdfunded or funded in general. Today we come across a new such device, from MJ Technology, that ditches ARM tech in favour of an x86 setup.
The newcomer is available via an Indiegogo campaign, that claims it’ll develop the “world’s first true made for Linux/Ubuntu x86 tablet”. This means we’ll get a 64 bit x86 processor inside, the same one used on regular laptops and desktops. MJ Technology wants to provide a hardware platform that supports any type of GNU/Linux distribution.
Keep in mind that Canonical and their partners have created Ubuntu slates with ARM chips inside, so they only support the mobile version of Ubuntu, not all the Linux-based platforms. Funding is rather modest now, with $2,120 out of the $200,000 fixed goal and with a month left to fund. Starting, at $230 and up, the tablet will have 4 versions, called Tanto, Mini Tanto, Wakizashi and Katana.
Tanto has a 10.1 inch screen, an Intel Atom x7 CPU, 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, plus an 8 MP camera and stereo speakers. The others vary from Intel Atom x5 CPU to 2-4 GB of RAM, 8.9 or 10.1 inch screens and up to 256 GB SSD storage.
