We usually rely on Chitika Insights to give us a glimpse on a certain market area, especially when it comes to tablets and smartphones. They base the stats on impressions of the ads they serve and they confirm that the iPad still leads the tablet market in the web traffic segment. Meanwhile, eMarketer estimates that the total number of tablet users will reach 89.5 million by 2014, so this is becoming a popular market.

Back to the Chitika analysis, this one is focused on the activity on the Kindle Fire, PlayBook, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy and iPad between December 30th and January 9th. A sample of hundreds of millions of impressions from the US and Canada is used here. The iPad is the ruler clearly, with over 15% of mobile traffic, while the other competitors are carrying a fierce race among themselves. This is why the graph above refers to average tablet impressions per 100 iPad impressions, since the other slates rate so poorly in comparison to the Apple gadget.

The Kindle Fire seems to be holding up quite well, with an average of 2.4 impressions per 100 iPad impressions, courtesy of the strong holiday sales. Then there’s the PlayBook on third place with an average of 1.8 impressions per 100 iPad imps and the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy with very similar functionality, price points and even scores, reaching 1.55 and 1.6 in the graph.
