Apple is officially bringing Pixelmator Pro to the iPad, marking the first major product move since it acquired the Pixelmator team in late 2024 — and it’s a clear signal that Apple wants the iPad taken seriously as a pro-grade creative machine.
Until now, Pixelmator Pro lived exclusively on macOS, while iPad and iPhone users were stuck with the older, more limited Pixelmator app. The new iPad release changes that equation entirely. Apple says the iPad version carries over essentially all of the Mac app’s core tools, reworked into a touch-first interface designed around the tablet form factor and fully optimized for Apple silicon.
Support for Apple Pencil is front and center. Pressure-sensitive brushes, precise selections, and natural-feeling drawing make the app feel less like a compromised port and more like a native creative tool. Gestures such as pinch-to-zoom, hover previews, and Pencil double-tap shortcuts are baked directly into the workflow, while projects sync seamlessly between iPad and Mac without breaking layers or effects.
On the feature side, Pixelmator Pro for iPad includes a full layer sidebar for images, text, shapes, and even video elements. Smart selection tools speed up cutouts, masking tools offer fine-grained control, and advanced utilities like Super Resolution, Deband, and Auto Crop help clean up and refine images quickly. Apple says performance is tuned specifically for modern iPads running iPadOS, enabling complex edits without noticeable slowdowns.
There’s also something new. A Warp tool makes its debut on iPad, letting creators bend, twist, and reshape layers freely — a feature aimed squarely at illustrators, designers, and mockup-heavy workflows. Apple is positioning Warp as part of its Creator Studio subscription, alongside prebuilt templates meant to speed up layout and concept work. Some advanced features will remain exclusive to subscribers, even for users who already own the Mac version.
Pixelmator Pro for iPad launches on January 28, available either through Apple Creator Studio or as part of an existing Pixelmator Pro purchase, depending on region.
