Developer Hamza Sood discovered new hints regarding future iPads in the iOS 8.1 beta 2. There are frameworks there containing graphical assets labeled “3X~ipad”, which suggest there are new Retina HD iPads coming.
Sood also posted the screen above on Twitter and the graphics related to the Clock app in iOS 8.1 beta 2 are offered in “3X~ipad”, or “2x~ipad” and “ipad” versions. The dev claims that the 3x PNG files indicate the presence of super high resolutions on iPad displays. The concept of Retina HD appeared on the iPhone 6 units unveiled last month and may apply to the new iPad Air too, once it’s unveiled next week.
Right now the current big iPads offer resolutions of 2048 x 1536 pixels, which stand for the Retina standard and 264 ppi. The iPad Air 2 may evolve to a high resolution, apparently. I’m guessing we could get stuck somewhere between 2K and 4K, if they really want to impress. What do you think?
