Since Apple released iOS 5.1 last week, we were bound to see a jailbreak for it sooner or later. Looks like “sooner” was the option here, with hacker I0n1c already taking care of the process. He managed to jailbreak the iOS 5.1 on the iPad 2 and meanwhile, you should know that older devices can use RedSn0w to perform a tethered jailbreak… or close to it.

A couple of days ago famous hacker pod2g, the one who created the Corona and Absinthe jailbreaks was confirmed to have started work on the vulnerabilities in iOS 5.1. I0n1c managed to beat him to it and posted the pics you see here on his Twitter account, confirming that he has jailbroken an iOS 5.1 iPad 2. The pics show an iPad 2 with the new software and running Cydia 1.1.5. I0n1c was also the guy behind the iOS 4 untether that was good enough for 3 software updates, so he gained quite a bit of popularity at the time.

We only have to wait now for the jailbreak to be available to the general public and I wonder how long it takes before we see the iPad 3 jailbroken as well. Also, will it be harder than usual? I guess we’ll have to wait and see and since only today the New iPad started arriving on customers’ doorsteps, there’s a long way till the hack takes place.
