The Intel Foundation is ready to sell its 4.9% stake in Imagination Technologies, the firm that supplies Apple with the great PowerVR GPUs for the iDevices. These components are key for the gaming abilities of the iPhone and iPad.
Once the sale goes through, the Intel Foundation and Intel Capital will no longer hold shares in Imagination Technologies, says J.P. Morgan Securities. Intel was a licensee of the British chip maker till now, using its 3D technology. Apple remains an important shareholder for Imagination Technologies, starting off at 3.6% in 2008 and reaching close to 10% recently.
The powerful PowerVR Series 6 chips made by the company have been available on every Apple tablet or phone since the iPhone 3GS. The latest gen Apple A8 chipset on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus features the PowerVR GX6450 six core GPU, that offers a performance boost of 84 times compared to the first iPhone from 2007. And meanwhile the iPad Air 2’s Apple A8X even beats the Snapdragon 810 in graphical benchmarks.
