You might be aware of a recent report saying that the HP TouchPad was actually the second best sold tablet in the USA, following the iPad… Of course the trigger for this success was the $99 fire sale, as expected. And now everyone wants a TouchPad, because they can port Android on it and make it the cheapest high end Android slate on the market.

CyanogenMod is the way to get Gingerbread on your TouchPad, it seems… Right now CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha 3 is taking care of business and bringing all the Android 2.3.x love on the device. The Alpha 3 version is available now for TouchPad hackers to install and believe it or not Android Ice Cream Sandwich is also coming to the HP tablet, according to inside sources. Of course, the latest CyanogenMod will be involved…

The team behind the hack is keen on reminding us that bugs are still present, although the Alpha 3 version brings quite a few fixes. The change log shows that the “sleep of death” bug has been solved, 2D/3D performance has increase in some apps, battery stats are now available, the WiFi is fixed, camera FPS is better (but still crappy) and much more.
