Googlebook App Compatibility May Vary on Intel Models, Google Says

Googlebook buyers considering an Intel-powered model may encounter occasional app-performance trade-offs, particularly with demanding Android apps and games. Google says the vast majority of Android apps run properly on both Intel and Qualcomm-based Googlebooks, but a smaller group may require additional developer work to reach full performance on Intel’s x86 platform.

Why the processor matters for Android apps

The issue stems from Android’s long-standing emphasis on Arm hardware, the architecture used in phones, tablets, and Qualcomm-powered Googlebooks. Third-party Googlebook manufacturers also offer Intel models, which use x86 processors. Google has not identified the specific apps or games that could be affected, so there is currently no definitive compatibility list for prospective buyers.

Google says it is working with app developers, Intel, and Qualcomm to improve compatibility and performance over time. The company has also said that the Play Store will include a dedicated section for apps optimized for Googlebooks, while users will still be able to install apps outside that curated selection.

Users will have access to the entire Play Store library.

That access does not necessarily mean identical behavior across every processor architecture. For mobile-computing users who depend on a particular game or complex Android app, an Intel Googlebook may warrant a compatibility check before purchase. Google’s guidance suggests that most everyday apps should be unaffected, but the company has yet to detail the exceptions.
