Apple could be preparing a cheaper iPad 3 it seems and also this new model could be coming this year, if a recent report from DigiTimes is accurate enough. Industry sources are quoted, involving Taiwan-based component maker Novatek Microelectronics and also Richtek Technology.

These together with Capella Microsystems and Integrated Memory Logic have been given the change to work with Apple, supplying circuits for the iPad 3. It seems that Apple wants to use low cost parts from Taiwanese companies to launch a cheap slate that will compete with the likes of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer and Acer models.

Some say that cheaper circuits will balance the high cost of the Retina Display that might be included on the new tablet. I guess that we’ll have to wait and see. Let’s hope that new iPad is not a mere revamp of the second gen version, with a mere display upgrade…
