We know all there is to know about the wonderful new Amazon Kindle Fire HD, both versions, 7 inch and 8.9 inch, but did you know that Android 4.0 takes care of their software part? Obviously, it’s hidden under a lot of Amazon services and apps, just like the first Kindle Fire. No idea if the upgrade of the original Kindle Fire also got Ice Cream Sandwich or not…

Anyway there’s obviously no talks about upgrading to Jelly Bean, but once the device get hacked and custom ROMs reach them, it’s only a matter of time till JB is ported. Honestly speaking, I would have liked Jelly Bean to be in the background, since it does bring a speed boost and that nifty Project Butter with 60 FPS in the UI. Overall, the new interface looks nice, especially if you’re used to the Amazon experience, but people may be looking for more. I’ve already seen anxious shoppers waiting to buy the Nexus 7 HD with its cool 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, just to bring a custom ROM to it and take advantage of the low price.

I believe Amazon may try to lock down the device, since it does make profit through the services it offers on the slate, rather than the hardware itself. Considering skilled hackers even managed to bring Android 4.0 to the Nokia N9, nothing is impossible nowadays. Expect first customizations of Kindle Fire HD software once the product is out in the following weeks.
