You’ve probably heard that the latest numbers are in, showing that the Apple iPad dominated yet another quarter in the tablet segment. This time we’re talking about Q4 2020, when Apple shipped 19.2 million slates. Apple is well ahead of rivals like Samsung, Microsoft or Dell and we have details below.
The latest report from Canalys confirms Apple is ahead of the pack, dominating the tablet market for the fourth quarter of 2020. All of this comes just as the iPad turned 11 years old on January 27th. The Cupertino giant’s shipments grew 40% year over year to 19.2 million, with Samsung being second. Apple even reached its best performance ever since Q4 2014, for a stellar year overall. Samsung kept its second place, with 9.9 million tablets shipped, which is a 41% increase from Q4 2019.
Amazon is placed on the third spot, thanks to the high holiday season demand, as it shipped 6.5 million slates. Lenovo was actually the fastest growing company in Q4, with a bump up of 125%, reaching 5.6 million units. Huawei was the only top 5 player to register a decrease of year on year shipments, from 4.5 million units in Q4 2019 to 3.5 million in Q4 2020. Tablets have grown as more and more people worked from home and had their school related tasks performed on mobile PCs.
Detachable tablets are once again a big deal, as shown at CES 2021. Tablets will keep doing well in 2021, with Apple preparing new iPad Pros, one with 5G, a new iPad Mini and Samsung working on a Tab S8. Huawei must find a way to be relevant again.
