Huawei surprised us today at MWC 2018 by not only unveiling the MediaPad M5 tablets, but also the Huawei MateBook X Pro laptop, a premium metal notebook with an edge to edge screen. The device is a 13.9 inch laptop that’s meant to rival the MacBooks. Let’s check it out.

First of all, this MateBook offers a premium metal body and an edge to edge display with a crazy 91% screen to body ratio. It also has a 3000 x 2000 screen resolution and one of its most original traits is the webcam, which is integrated within the keyboard and rises up when needed. The keyboard is backlit and below it rests a very generous touchpad, one of the biggest on any laptops on the market.

Huawei MateBook X Pro runs on Windows 10, complete with Cortana and an instant translation feature, which is achieved with the aid of Microsoft solutions. The specs include a Core i5 or Core i7 8th gen CPU, 8 or 16 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of SSD storage. The graphics department doesn’t sound like much, with an NVIDIA MX150 2 GB GDDR5 RAM solution.

All of these are packed within a 14.6 mm thick body, that weighs 1.33 kilograms. The 57.4 Whr battery provides up to 12 hours of video playback and acoustics are a highlight of the device, with 4 speakers and 4 microphones integrated. Tweeters and subwoofers are even part of the package and on the connectivity front there’s an USB-A port, two USB Type-C ports, of which one is a Thunderbolt 3.

A nifty feature is that the Power button integrates the fingerprint scanner. This 13.9 incher starts at $1842.
