There’s such a thing as a “gaming tablet” segment and it’s going fine, since quite a few companies have entered it. If you’re not paying big bucks for a Razer or Acer gaming tablet, you’ve got the affordable Archos ones, or the even more affordable GPD XD, that we just unboxed. It’s priced at $139 on GearBest.com and it’s a 5 inch gaming tablet, with a bit of a personality.

The device runs on Android 4.4 and channels the vibe of a Nintendo DS to be honest. It also has the controls of a PSP, I’d say and it’s quite elegant at first sight. Inside its box we find the charger and USB cable, plus the manual. No headphones, no case, no trouble. Inside the console there’s a quad core Rockchip RK3288 processor, plus 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, 32 GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

The CPU mentioned above is the sort of chip you’d find on a TV box with Android. The screen on board is a 5 inch 1280 x 720 pixel unit and the graphics portion is taken care of by the Mali T764 GPU. Other specs include HDMI and a 6000 mAh battery, that on paper should offer 6 hours of video playback. There’s no camera here, but we do get a gravity sensor, WiFi b/g/n, microUSB 2.0, audio jack and the machine is available in blue or black.

It’s got the typical controller setup, with action buttons, D Pad, shoulder buttons, volume buttons and a Smart and Select key. Key mapping is also available and a Nintendo DS emulator has been provided by GPD. The whole thing is pretty hefty at 300 grams and measures 24 mm in thickness. I was happy to play Asphalt 8 on it in a pretty comfy manner, I have to say, so the first impression was good.
