The One Laptop Per Child project is now going into a modular direction, like many other major projects out there, Ara included. One Education, the Aussie partner of the initiative will be launching a new hybrid laptop in a few weeks, with modularity in mind.
This will allow users to swap components in pure Project Ara style. There aren’t any official details just yet, but luckily, we managed to get hold of some pictures shown in this article. The newcomer is dubbed XO-Infinity and it can be used as both a laptop and a tablet. It shares the colourful approach from the current OLPC devices and its modular system seems to be pretty kid-friendly.
The good news is that for many years to come schools will be able to keep these OLCPs and only swap out components with new ones. This is ideal for lower budget nations and schools and we can’t wait to hear more about the project. Separate modules for the XO-Infinity’s camera, battery, networking and processing will be available. Making the device as easy to repair and upgrade as possible is the main goal behind OLPC.
