The Aakash tablet from India is getting a lot of press lately, or better said its follow-up version. It may be that $35 price tag to blame… Anyway, yet another cheap tablet is headed to India, this time coming from UK based company Datawind, that will sell two versions of its Ubislate device.

The cheaper Ubislate is priced at around $57 and comes with a resistive screen, but for $20 more you get a capacitive one on board. Ubislate tablets have 7 inch screens, 800 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. Other specs include a standard USB port, Android 2.3 as OS and the resistive version of the slate will get 2GB of storage. The $76 model will get 4GB instead and it appears that the products will be available in India by May end. The Aakash II tablet will have a pretty similar configuration, so it will be interesting to see who wins the duel.

Datawind has been working with Hyderabad-based VMCSystems to make these tablets in India, after the Quad partnership didn’t work out. Aircel, leading telecom operator in the country will offer unlimited internet access on the device for a mere $2 a month.
