As you know, Apple has been sued for advertising the New iPad as packing 4G technology in Australia, when actually it doesn’t deliver any LTE in that area. Now, Apple battles the authorities, saying that they referred to the 4G capabilities of the tablet talking about speed and not technology.
Apple was initially sued for misleading customers and it was criticized and sanctioned by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. The problem the authorities had was that the public bought the 4G iPad and believed it delivered LTE or WiMAX compatibility, but ended up disappointed. Amusing as it may seem, the Cupertino giant is saying that the 4G is a “state of mind” rather than a promise. Keep in mind that Apple does offer a device with LTE modem in Australia, but the modem is compatible only with the LTE networks in USA, so it’s useless.
The 3G networks from Australia can be classified as 4G in some instances Apple argues, being truly lame about this story. They say that 4G is the throughput and not the network technology promoted by a local service provider. Anyway the punishment wasn’t that severe, they just had to post some big notes on the products that said “Does Not Offer 4G” or something like it, so I don’t get why there’s all this commotion about this story…
