Xiaomi 18 Fold foldable smartphone

Xiaomi’s 18 Fold may be among the first foldables to pair a large tablet-style interior display with LPDDR6 memory, but the company reportedly will not rely on a single supplier for that new RAM standard. Leaker Digital Chat Station says Xiaomi plans to source LPDDR6 chips from both China’s CXMT and SK Hynix as it prepares the device for mass production.

A supply safeguard for a new memory generation

Xiaomi had previously said the 18 Fold would be the first commercial phone to debut LPDDR6 memory from ChangXin Memory Technologies, better known as CXMT. That claim can still stand even if some production units use SK Hynix chips, since the foldable is expected to introduce CXMT’s LPDDR6 to the market rather than exclusively use it.

The reported dual-supplier approach reflects the gap between starting mass production and meeting the volume requirements of a flagship launch. CXMT’s initial LPDDR6 capacity is said to be limited, so bringing in SK Hynix could help Xiaomi keep early 18 Fold inventory from being constrained by one component supplier. Both reported versions would still use LPDDR6 memory.

CXMT has announced LPDDR6 chips with speeds of up to 12,800 Mbps and capacities of up to 16GB per chip. Xiaomi says the 18 Fold’s memory will work alongside its in-house XRING O3 processor, with the combination delivering up to 113.8 GB/s of bandwidth. Higher memory bandwidth is particularly relevant for integrated graphics and AI processing, which increasingly move large amounts of data between the processor and RAM.

Xiaomi and CXMT reportedly established a joint lab in 2022 and spent about a year tuning LPDDR6 for this implementation. The 18 Fold is also expected to move to a wider format than Xiaomi’s MIX Fold line, with a 7.58-inch internal display, a 6,000 mAh battery, and Leica-branded cameras.

Xiaomi is scheduled to present the 18 Fold on September 7 alongside other XRING O3-based products. US availability, pricing, and final memory configurations have not been announced, but the device could be one to watch for buyers interested in a larger foldable screen and Xiaomi’s expanding in-house hardware platform.
