TCL is bringing its NXTPAPER display concept to AMOLED phones with the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro, creating a large-screen mobile device that can shift from a conventional color Android experience into a stripped-back, monochrome reading mode. For people who read long articles, ebooks, or documents on a phone but do not want to carry a separate e-reader, that is the defining idea behind the new lineup.
The P80 Ultra and P80 Pro each use a 6.83-inch, 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. TCL says the display reaches 3,200 nits of peak brightness, covers 100% of the P3 color space, and has color accuracy below Delta E 1. The company’s NXTPAPER treatment adds a nano-matrix layer intended to reduce ambient reflections, along with a light-evening film and circularly polarized light technology. Those display and eye-comfort figures are TCL claims, rather than independent measurements of the finished phones.
A phone mode designed around reading, not E Ink
A physical NXTPAPER Key on the Ultra and Pro activates Max Ink Mode, which switches the AMOLED panel and interface to a simplified monochrome experience focused on reading and fewer notifications. It is not an E Ink display: the hardware remains an AMOLED screen, with software and optical treatments intended to make extended reading more comfortable.
TCL rates the 5,800mAh battery in these two models for up to seven days of reading use and up to 26 days of standby in Max Ink Mode. Those estimates should not be read as typical mixed-use battery life with 5G, cameras, color apps, and normal screen activity, but they explain why TCL has made the mode accessible through a dedicated button rather than burying it in settings.
Ultra adds optical zoom; Pro keeps the core reading hardware
The P80 Ultra is the more capable camera phone of the pair. Its 50MP main camera uses a 1/1.56-inch sensor, joined by an 8MP ultrawide and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and both optical and electronic stabilization. It also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The P80 Pro retains the same NXTPAPER AMOLED screen, MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite processor, 8GB of RAM, 5,800mAh battery, and 45W wired charging, but drops the 3x periscope camera in favor of a dual-camera system led by a 50MP main camera. Both models are available with 256GB or 512GB of storage.
MediaTek publicly documents the standard Dimensity 7400 as a 4nm chip with four Cortex-A78 cores running up to 2.6GHz, four Cortex-A55 cores, and a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU. TCL uses the “Elite” name for its P80 chips, but MediaTek has not published separate specifications identifying any differences for a Dimensity 7400 Elite variant.
The regular P80 is a more conventional midrange phone
The entry-level TCL P80 shares the 6.83-inch 1.5K 120Hz AMOLED format, but it does not include NXTPAPER treatments, the NXTPAPER Key, or Max Ink Mode. It uses a Dimensity 7300 Elite processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, a 5,000mAh battery, and 45W charging. Its primary camera is 50MP.
That distinction makes the hierarchy unusually clear: the Ultra is for buyers who want both the reading-focused display and optical zoom, while the Pro preserves the portable-reading proposition without the specialized telephoto hardware. The standard P80 may appeal on price, but it loses the feature that separates this family from a crowded field of big-screen AMOLED midrange phones.
Long software commitment, but U.S. details are not set
All three P80 phones launch with Android 16 and carry a promise of seven years of security updates. TCL says the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro will receive four major Android version upgrades, while the regular P80 is promised three. The duration is notable in this price category, although the eventual cadence of those updates remains to be seen.
European pricing starts at €549 for the P80 Ultra with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, €429 for the P80 Pro with 8GB and 256GB, and €349 for the P80 with 8GB and 128GB. The P80 line goes on sale in Europe on September 3, 2026, followed by Latin America in October. TCL says U.S. availability will come later, with no American launch date, pricing, or market-specific configurations announced so far.
