It’s been over a year since the first Surface tablets started selling and not even now we don’t have a clear number of the units sold over the first months. The Surface 2 and Surface Pro are off to what looks like a successful start in the meantime…
Microsoft is saying that the Surface 2 preorders have started selling out, so either Microsoft supplied too few units, or the people actually want the product. Last year, the debut of the Surface was plagued by lack of units in many shops, as Microsoft chose its own shops over big retailers and ended up regretting it.
Last year MS ended up with at least $900 million in unsold Surface slates, one of the reasons why Steve Ballmer had to be forced out the door. This time at least the company got the supplies right. Microsoft is probably keeping availability limited to ensure it doesn’t have too much stock left over this time as well… Products will hit the stores on October 22nd.
