The folks of GigaOm took the SmartQ U7 projector tablet for a spin and this is a big deal, since this is one of the few slates with projector incorporated out there. Kevin Tofel from GigaOm and TIME’s Jared Newman are impressed by the projector, but not overwhelmed…

This is a 7 inch tablet that we’ve written about here, quite a while ago. This device supports a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution and relies on a dual core TI OMAP 4 processor, 8 GB of storage and it runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It supports WiFi and Bluetooth and it has both front and rear cameras, as well as HDMI output.

The projector uses a small Texas Instruments DLP chip and Smart Devices, the maker of the tablet somehow managed to add the module without increasing the thickness of the slate. We’re talking about a 35 lumen projector, that is only useful in a room with shades drawn or a darker room maybe. If you hold the device 6 feet from a wall, you will project an image that’s 50 inches in diagonal, but sadly the output is only 854 x 480 pixels.

If this model tempts you, you can get it from PandaWill for $260.
