RIM, the Canadian maker of the BlackBerry smartphones is one of the few major handset manufacturers staying away from the tablet segment, but that may not last that long, according to some rumours. The folks of BBleaks claim that a source of theirs said that RIM is working on a tablet right now, with the supposed named of the slate being “BlackPad” or “Cobalt”.

Apparently, the unit was in development long before the Apple iPad and the new product will be more compact than the one coming from Cupertino. Another rumour mentions that RIM has been ordering 8.9 inch displays from Hon Hai and if you’re dreaming of a device that looks like the one in the pic above, keep in mind that it’s only a mockup.

Let’s see if the supposed “BlackBerry tablet” getting a decent OS, interface, battery and a neat form factor and then we’ll talk…

  • I feel the tablet should include a front camera for video communication since video communication is becoming a very popular for of communicating. Maybe have Skype apps or oovoo apps. It could attract more customers. there are rumors that the iphone and next series of ipad will include a face camera and blackberry needs to be able to compete. I am loyal to blackberry and love my blackberry i would like to see them remain on top with the best devices.

i think it would be great if blackberry is thinking or comes out with this “BlackPad” or “Cobalt” gadget. I'll probably be the first one in line to get my hands on one. I agree with you Matu Bundy if they do it they should place a front camera for video communication.
