RIM, the Canadian maker of the BlackBerry smartphones is one of the few major handset manufacturers staying away from the tablet segment, but that may not last that long, according to some rumours. The folks of BBleaks claim that a source of theirs said that RIM is working on a tablet right now, with the supposed named of the slate being “BlackPad” or “Cobalt”.

Apparently, the unit was in development long before the Apple iPad and the new product will be more compact than the one coming from Cupertino. Another rumour mentions that RIM has been ordering 8.9 inch displays from Hon Hai and if you’re dreaming of a device that looks like the one in the pic above, keep in mind that it’s only a mockup.

Let’s see if the supposed “BlackBerry tablet” getting a decent OS, interface, battery and a neat form factor and then we’ll talk…
