Onyx is a smaller player in the eReader field, but it does provide some pretty solid alternatives to your average Kindle. This time they debuted a product called Onyx BOOK Poke2, which is an eBook reader with a 6 inch screen, that offers a 1488 x 1072 pixel resolution. It also relies on an E Ink panel and it’s more compact than the Kindle Paperwhite, thanks to its slimmer bezels.
Also, it supports color temperature adjustments, which is something that the Kindle product doesn’t have. This means it can reduce blue light and do less harm to your eyes. The device runs on Android 9.0 and also freely lets you install third party apps. The product is already on sale right now, priced at $190, but there’s also another model in the works, a Poke2 Color, with a color E Ink display. The Poke2 Color has only been teased so far, without its maker showing off more than the top half.
It could end up using the same E Ink Print Color screen technology as the new PocketBook Color and other recently announced color eReaders. We could get support for up to 4096 colors, which is an useful trait for comic books, magazines, textbooks and the works. Back to the black and white model, the Onyx BOOX Poke2 packs a 6 inch E Ink Carta Display with a 300 pixel per inch panel, Front Light and a 2 GHz Qualcomm octa core processor. It also has 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and a 1500 mAh battery.
There’s also dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1 and suport for multiple formats, ranging from PDF to EPUB, MOBI, TXT, HTML, DOC and RTF, plus TIFF and BMP. Even WAV and MP3 are in the mix and the product measures 6.8 mm in thickness and weighs 150 grams.
