Chromebooks are basically the new netbooks, in spite of the fact they’re bigger than the models that Acer and ASUS made popular. They usually come with very low prices, modest hardware specs and rely on Google’s Chrome OS and productivity suite from Docs. However, the perception that all Chromebooks are cheap is wrong and there are also higher end units. A new Chromebook Pixel could be coming soon.
Dell’s Chromebook 13 series includes models that offer up to 8 GB of RAM and up to an Intel Core i5 processor, with prices ranging from $379 to $799. The latest Google Chromebook Pixel is a premium device, that sells for $999 or more. However, an even more potent model is incoming. The Chromium OS code review group includes a discussion section, where there were hints about a next gen Chromebook Pixel, with a multi colored light bar.
It’s also rumored to include 16 GB of RAM, an Intel Skylake processor and a backlit keyboard. Of course, the device the forum mentioned could be something else entirely. All we know is that it’s codenamed “chell”. It could end up as a MacBook rival that runs both Android and Chrome OS.
Expect to learn more at the Google I/O event in May.
