Microsoft unveiled a slew of new products in early October 2019 and those were promised for a holiday season 2020 debut. I’m talking about the Surface Neo and Duo particularly, but today we have good news. Turns out that the device formerly known as Surface Phone will come earlier.
Microsoft Surface Duo is a dual screen smartphone with Android and some Microsoft customization. It appears that Microsoft has decided to debut the device this summer instead of November or December. According to the report MS hopes to have all of the hardware and software tweaks ready by April. We may see a presentation of the final version at the next big Microsoft event, where the Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2 are rumored to be showcased.
I’ll remind you that the dual screened Surface Duo packs two 5.6 inch screens with a resolution of 1350 x 1800 pixels, which translate to an 8.3 inch screen when opened up. The product will have a Snapdragon 855 processor inside, 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. Expect other configurations, but for now 5G is not part of the package. The coronavirus may affect the timeline of the debut and Microsoft has to be the first company launching products earlier not later since the start of the epidemics.
The product has evolved a bit, since its last leak from last month also showed its first camera, that was lacking from the prototype from October. The device spotted in someone’s hand was also lighter and slimmer. The Duo uses two screens side by side and it doesn’t intend to be a real foldable like the Mate X or Galaxy Fold. There are multiple use modes here, including laptop and tent, plus the ability to detect position of the hinge and change app UI.
Let’s not get too optimistic especially after seeing that crash from a few days ago.
