LG Display is the biggest supplier for panels for the iPad Mini, since AU Optronics has poor yields in the production of panels for the devices, say industry sources. LG Display and AUO have been seen as the main suppliers for the Apple iPad Mini panels, with around 4 million of those being shipped for the tablet in November.
If we analyze shipments so far LG Display is supplying the most panels, according to sources. The idea is that the South Korean company is able to provided enough panels for the 7.9 inch Apple tablet, while AUO’s yield rates are too poor on the new and smaller displays. There’s also a recent IHS iSuppli report, indicating that any display manufacturing and yield issues may affect the iPad Mini availability for the rest of the year.
Radiant Opto Electronics and Coretronic are handling the production of backlight units for the iPad Mini and they’re trying to cope with the demand, say the same sources. With the AUO problems taken into account, industry observers expect the total shipments of the iPad Mini to reach 6 to 8 million units by the year end.
