During this week’s SID 2011 event, Nanosys showcased a new display technology, the QDEF screen, that was even implemented into an iPad, as shown below. The appeal of this new tech is the high color gamut supported and the fact that it provides OLED color depth without the same battery drainage and a lower price.
The solution will come to “probably an Android tablet” in Q4, although it’s strange to hear that and then see an iPad using it. Right now, Nanosys representative only mentioned that a Korean firm will pick this QDEF technology up, so it’s either Samsung or LG that will launch a tablet in the following months.
QDEF stands for Quantum Dot Enhancement Film and this piece of technology only makes a screen 100 microns thicker, so it’s not a problem for manufacturers.
