Huawei Mate X and Mate Xs are ready to get a follow-up, which may debut before the previously estimated Fall IFA 2020 release. Huawei Mate X2 has just received a patent, accompanied by sketches and renders courtesy of Letsgodigital.
The patent comes from Huawei and seems to signal a different direction for the new foldable. Huawei actually applied for the design patent back in July 12 2019. It was submitted in China and it was only approved on April 29th 2020. There are 16 color product images included, showing quite a few angles of the device. The product turns from phone to tablet and viceversa. The flexible display is placed on the inside, like the Galaxy Fold, but there’s no punch hole camera or notch.
The bezels are also rather narrow, compared to the Fold and Mate X. We also get an extra display on the outside and unlike the Fold, Huawei seems to have placed a quad camera right next to the front screen. The second screen is less wide. We also see a zoom lens in the mix, shown as a square camera. It’s likely the one from the P40 Pro. Before starting to speculate and do some solid analysis on the future of Huawei foldables, I should probably remind you that Huawei admitted to losing up to $70 million the Mate Xs.
The production is still very expensive and yield is low. Samsung appears to have profited from the Galaxy Fold and Z Flip, though… I think that everybody is holding out for the $999 Xiaomi foldable, or take their bearings from an overpriced Apple flexible ouvre.
